Peter Volken Smidt – episode 2 – Electrifying a Contest 30

Introduction Robust-MT Marine Technology BV

Those who cannot divide cannot multiply! We at Robust-MT Marine Technology BV believe that success is a combination of factors. Knowledge is just one of these, but it is useless without facilities, resources, capacities, etc. It is for this reason that we will never be frenetic about sharing knowledge or providing a platform to someone else who deserves it or when there are useful knowledge to be shared.

In episode 1 we met Peter Volken Smidt. In this episode we read how the Contest 30 was stripped of its old diesel.

Removing the old engine:

Although I have two right hands, the old diesel engine feels like a pain in my stomach.
And yes, it is a compact engine, but lifting a piece of old iron weighing more than 100 kilos from your boat is no easy task. For me, the engine is not worth much more than the scrap price and a lot of hassle to disassemble, there are probably people who still see something in an old running diesel. Through Marktplaats I offer the engine for free while the boat is still in the water, on the condition that it must be professionally removed.
In no time I have enough responses and I can choose who I want to do the work and therefore the engine. Jan, a truck mechanic with a hobby of 'overhauling old diesel engines' is interested in the project.
I make an appointment and Jan comes to the port with a buddy, a mobile crane and trailer to remove the engine. And it must be said, in less than an hour Jan has neatly loosened all the stuck nuts and bolts and the engine is ready to be lifted via the cockpit hatch. Compact is a relative term. The width of the opening was probably tailored to an engine without a gearbox at the time. Lashing and groaning, we finally manage to rid the boat of the polluting diesel. Lightened by 130 kg of metal, the butt of the boat rises slightly out of the water. I charter Jan to put the new heavy battery back in the boat now that the engine is out, because I will probably not be able to get it in easily when the boat is on the shore. Step 1 is completed, time for the next phase, getting the boat on shore.
