Electric sailing, enjoy the silence

An almost meditative experience

Electric boating, enjoy the silence. Experience nature as it should always be.

Electric cars

Who could have predicted 10 years ago how many electric cars would be on the road by 2022? There's a massive electrification of the vehicle fleet. The reasons for this vary, but include sustainability (debatable), status, performance, and subsidies. There are also drawbacks: the cars are expensive, heavy, charge slowly, and so on.

The disadvantages of combustion engines in recreational boating

Oddly enough, the water sports industry hasn't seen such rapid growth yet, even though the benefits are far greater there than in the automotive industry. Combustion engines in water sports directly lead to permanent pollution of the ecosystem due to leaking oil and fuels and exhaust fumes directly on or even in the water. Maintaining a combustion engine in a boat isn't as simple as a quick trip to the garage and often expensive custom work. And then there's the noise pollution—aren't we supposed to go out on the water to enjoy nature, the open air, and to relax? How annoying is it to be disturbed by screeching two-stroke engines or heavily pounding marine diesels with their accompanying stench and pollution?

And what about these disadvantages of electric motors in recreational boating?

The disadvantages are actually negligible. A battery pack generally weighs no more than a marine engine and its associated fuel tanks. Maintenance is virtually non-existent. The purchase price is (still) higher, but that certainly doesn't apply to the operating costs. While the slower refueling process may be true, almost all marinas have shore power, and a modern battery charges in 2-3 hours.

Isn't it necessarily faster to go from the harbor to a bunker vessel to refuel, assuming it's nearby, and back to the mooring? While the battery charges quietly in the harbor, leaving the crew free for other, more enjoyable activities than refueling the boat? Even if shore power isn't available, the battery of an electric motor be charged using, for example, solar energy .

Range

A common argument is the range of electric motors in shipping. This proves to be an interesting aspect of this way of sailing. From our own experience, we can say that doubling the speed requires roughly six times the motor's power. Suppose a motor can deliver 3000W and is traveling at 7 knots, then a 4000Wh battery can sail for 1 hour and 20 minutes before it is completely depleted. However, sailing completely depleted is not good for the battery, so it can be said that at full power, a full battery can only sail for an hour with a range of just under 13 kilometers.

However, when we sail at half this speed at one-sixth of the power (500W), the speed is a very comfortable 3.5 knots, and with a range of 6 hours, this results in a range of 40 km with 25% of the battery remaining. Most people don't motor their boat 40 km in a day, and if the distance to be covered is greater, simply sailing a little slower can significantly increase the range.

The above figures aren't fictitious, but rather from our own boat, where we use two 3000W pods. We enjoy it most when the power is kept below 500W and we glide in complete silence over perfectly flat water. At full power, we have enough power to wakeboard with a SUP… and that behind a cabin catamaran. Best of all, our pods also regenerate under sail, so we often return to the marina with batteries that are just as full or even fuller than when we left.
