To connect a second battery to a vehicle or vessel, a disconnect relay is often used. It's crucial that this relay can handle large currents because sometimes one battery is nearly empty while the other is still nearly full. When the relay closes, a balancing current first flows, which can easily reach 100 to 400 A. A standard automotive relay can't handle this and will burn out.
