TS Enovations IMD3+ Insulation Monitor

IMD3+ Insulation Monitor for Floating 230V Networks Do you generate 230V with an inverter in a commercial vehicle or camper? Then that network is deliberately designed as a floating network: disconnected from earth. Indoors, that floating network provides protection automatically. The risk arises as soon as you use 230V outside the vehicle. You are then grounded yourself, and a hidden insulation fault can generate a lurching current bypassing the floating network. Even 30 mA can be dangerous. The IMD3+ (IMD: Insulation Measuring Device) continuously measures the insulation value between phase, neutral, and chassis. If this drops below the safe limit, the IMD3+ switches off the inverter via the remote connection. This happens even before you start working outside. With shore power, it also monitors the mains earth and warns of a poor or missing earth connection. Why a standard RCD is insufficient here An RCD compares the current in phase and neutral and trips as soon as current leaks to earth. In a floating network (IT system), that fixed earth reference is missing. In the event of a first fault, no fault current flows, so the RCD detects nothing. The fault remains hidden, and that is precisely the danger. Why choose the IMD3+ * No power limit: suitable for inverters of any power rating. * No switching capacity: switches the inverter via the remote connection. * Grounding check: warns of a poor or missing ground connection when connected to shore power. * KIWA certified: meets strict international requirements, even outside Europe. * Clear status indication: green LED for safe operation, flashing LED in case of an insulation fault. * Safe design: 230V AC terminals inaccessible; equipped with type approval. Made for the Victron ecosystem The IMD series was developed for inverter installations and works with Victron MultiPlus and Quattro. You configure the floating grid via VE.Configure or VictronConnect. This allows you to build on technology you understand right from the start. When is insulation monitoring required? Insulation monitoring is required as soon as a vehicle can power external 230V equipment via the inverter. NEN 1010 section 717 (commercial vehicles) and section 721 (caravans and motorhomes) then apply. An earth rod is not a reliable alternative for mobile installations. Top Systems has been a Victron True Blue Distributor since 1984 and provides support with connection diagrams, configuration advice, and support: before, during, and after installation. Frequently Asked Questions What is an insulation monitor and what does the IMD3+ do? An insulation monitor (IMD) continuously measures the insulation value of a floating 230V network. The IMD3+ detects a hidden insulation fault and switches off the inverter before the situation becomes dangerous, ensuring you can safely use 230V outside the vehicle. Why doesn't a residual current device (RCD) work in my camper or commercial vehicle? A floating network lacks a fixed earth. In the event of a first fault, no fault current flows away, so the RCD does not trip. An insulation monitor measures the insulation itself and does intervene. Am I safe inside the vehicle then? Yes. Inside, the floating network provides protection in the event of a first fault. The risk arises outdoors: if you use 230V tools there, you are grounded yourself and current can flow away through your body. When is insulation monitoring mandatory? As soon as the vehicle can supply 230V outdoors via the inverter. In that case, NEN 1010 section 717 (commercial vehicles) and section 721 (caravans and motorhomes) apply. Does the IMD3+ work with my Victron inverter? Yes. The IMD series works with Victron MultiPlus and Quattro. The inverter is switched via the remote connection. You configure the floating grid via VE.Configure or VictronConnect. What happens when I connect shore power? The IMD3+ then checks whether the mains ground is in order and warns of a poor or missing ground, ensuring your installation is safely powered even when connected to shore power.
