How does insulation monitoring work? An insulation monitor applies a signal to the live wires, which the insulation monitor continuously measures. If the outgoing signal differs from the returning signal, the insulation monitor immediately switches off the power. When a portable static inverter is used and a proper safety earth is not possible, the NEN1010 guideline prescribes the use of a floating grid system. An IT system is a floating grid system with respect to earth. A floating grid system can be achieved through galvanic isolation and/or decoupling.
