The major advantage of FET (Field Effect Transistor) battery isolators is their very low voltage drop: less than 0.02 volts at low current and 0.1 volts at maximum current. The alternator's output voltage does not need to be increased when using an Argo FET battery isolator. Alternator 'energize' connection: some alternators only start charging if there is voltage on the B+ connection. When the alternator is connected directly to a battery, there will be voltage on the B+ connection. However, a diode or FET battery isolator isolates the batteries from the alternator, preventing it from starting. The new Argo FET battery isolators have a separate, current-limited 'Energize' connection that allows voltage to be applied to the B+ connection when the ignition is turned to the ignition position.
