If two of these metals are in a conducting liquid and are electrically connected, a current will flow through the liquid. This affects the 'least noble' metal. Seawater is an excellent conductor and potentially causes strong corrosion. However, 'fresh' water is also conductive! Zinc anodes are installed to prevent damage to the propeller, propeller shaft, valves and other metal parts of a boat. The less noble zinc is then affected instead of the other metal parts. A steel or aluminum ship's skin can also be seriously damaged. A shore power connection without earth and earth leakage circuit breaker is extremely dangerous. When connecting the ship directly to shore power, all metal parts must be connected to the earth wire of the shore connection. The earth leakage circuit breaker interrupts the power supply when a leakage current (moisture!) or short circuit occurs to the metal parts. Without a protective earth and earth leakage circuit breaker, the boat and the water around the boat could come under tension as a result of a short circuit or a leakage current! However, as a result of the earth connection to the shore and via shore connections of other boats, electrolytic corrosion will increase significantly. Moisture and electrolytic potentials will also often result in the earth leakage circuit breaker tripping frequently or even immediately after connection to shore. The best way to prevent electrolytic corrosion while guaranteeing optimal safety is to install an isolation transformer. The isolation transformer transfers energy to the on-board network without direct electrical contact. The electricity is converted into magnetism in a toroidal transformer and then converted back into electricity. The neutral line of the secondary side of the transformer is connected to the housing and the ground of the ship (all metal parts). In the event of an electrical fault, an earth leakage circuit breaker or a fuse will operate. Soft start is a standard feature in the Victron Energy isolation transformer. Soft start ensures that the power is switched on gradually so that the shore fuse is not overloaded. Important advice is to connect the secondary side to the earth of the 230 V network by means of a temporary earth connection in an installation with an isolation transformer that is (temporarily) not in the water. This is to provide optimal safety in this situation.
