Robust-MT Insiders #03: the traditional ships fair

Insiders #03: The Traditional Ships Fair, a collaboration between Robust-MT Marine Technology BV, Zuidwestersloep, and De Stille Boot.

Welcome to Robust-MT Insiders, where we share what goes on behind the scenes at the company! In November, we attended the Traditional Ships Fair , and we brought back a lot of great experiences. Let's talk about them.

“What is the Traditional Ships Exchange?”

The Traditional Ships Fair is a fair for enthusiasts, with the goal of keeping heritage and classic Dutch ships afloat. There are a few boats on display, but also plenty of parts, books (reference works), and maintenance materials. It's a small but incredibly enjoyable and friendly fair.

Traditional Ships Fair 05

“Why was Robust-MT at the ship exchange?”

As a company, we were invited to exhibit our products here. We had to think about it for a while, as this trade show focuses on traditional shipping, and we're particularly passionate about cutting-edge electric motors. Ultimately, we went for it, and we don't regret it.

We were asked for two reasons: first, because we make electric propulsion systems, which allow us to return to sustainable, silent sailing without smelly diesel and gasoline. And second, our director, Remco, is on the board of the Sustainable Sailing Coalition .

However, we didn't want to be alone because we simply didn't have enough equipment. So we asked our partners Zuidwestersloep and Stille Boot to join us, and we shared a stand. We from Robust were there two of the three days. The first day was mainly older people, and on Sunday there were also families and young couples.

“What did the traditional ship exchange look like?”

It was a really fun, small-scale fair with not only boat products but also food stands and a well-prepared meal for the participants on Sunday. There were also fun activities for children, and everyone was very enthusiastic and friendly.

“What is the difference between the Traditional Ships Fair and, for example, Hiswa?”

The Hiswa is truly a sales fair where the product range is on display. You come there with a genuine interest in buying something. You might be there for a specific boat, or specific winches, or propellers. The Traditional Ships Fair is a show for enthusiasts where you can browse a few products but are primarily there to talk about boats. We personally prefer the Traditional Ships Fair to a large-scale fair like Hiswa.

“What did you most enjoy seeing at the Traditional Ships Fair?”

Of course, I absolutely loved the Zuidwestersloep Tjotter, a traditional boat with a modern metal design and an electric motor that perfectly blends the two worlds. There was also a very nice boat, which I only discovered on the last day was a new plastic boat that looked very realistically like an old one. I also loved the fact that they had a woodworking area. There was nothing untoward about the show, and nothing that should be changed next year.

“What did you find most contrasting with the rest of the fair?”

I actually think we were. The Traditional Ships Fair is about—logically speaking—traditional ships. We, on the other hand, aren't about tradition, but about the future.
