Torqeedo Travel XP vs ePropulsion Spirit in a scouting Lelieschouw
Those who have been following us know we're huge fans of the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus in a Scouting Lelievlet . Scouting Tjarda from Sassenheim Torqeedo Travel XP from us . Time for a hands-on test and comparative product analysis.
When we arrived at the scouting site, it was chilly, there was a strong wind, and the test equipment turned out to be two heavy Lelieschouwen. While we believe an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus is the perfect tool for a Lelievlet, Scouting Tjarda might have made the right choice with the Torqeedo Travel XP . A Lelieschouw weighs roughly 1300kg, compared to 700kg for the Lelievlet.
We headed out to the Kagerplassen lakes, and it immediately became clear that the Torqeedo Travel XP has more low-end torque and accelerates faster. At 33% of its power, the ePropulsion already needed 100% to keep up. Once on the open water, the Torqeedo also proved to be somewhat more efficient. Although not exactly tested under laboratory conditions, the Torqeedo seemed to sail just as fast at 500W as the ePropulsion at 700W.
Conclusion
Does the Torqeedo Travel XP the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus from the Robust-MT throne?
No, not in our opinion. As we mentioned before, a Lelievlet is more than satisfied with an ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus . The Torqeedo Travel XP won't make much difference in terms of speed. Moreover, the Torqeedo Travel XP is significantly more expensive than the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus . What do you get for that price difference? 600W of extra power, on-board GPS, a very nice color display, phone connectivity, and possibly better build quality. The question is whether these are the unique selling points for Scouting use.
For use on a scouting Lelievlet, we still recommend the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus or a Torqeedo Travel . However, if towing is required, or if you have a Lelieschouw instead of a Lelievlet, the choice after this test is 100% clear: the Torqeedo Travel XP .
During the test, there was also some serious competition. Not between the Travel and the Spirit, but the Travel was slowed down by a heavy (>10 hp) diesel engine. The Travel didn't give a kick, although the diesel ultimately won.
Overall, there's something else worth mentioning. The ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus is absolutely silent, while the Torqeedo Travel XP is audible. Certainly not disturbing and still completely negligible compared to a combustion engine, but still very noticeable in a direct comparison.
