A few months ago, we were approached and asked if we'd be interested in publishing a piece in Zeilen magazine about the electrification of a sailing yacht. We didn't hesitate to ask; of course we were interested.
Electric sailing on the Haringvliet
Friday, February 10th, was the day. It was cold, really cold, and our entire boat, along with the dock, was covered in a layer of ice. But it was also a beautiful, clear morning with a light mist, a rising sun, and a gentle breeze. Completely alone on the water—it couldn't get much better.
We sailed out of the berth so quietly that the cameraman, who was setting up in our dinghy in the adjacent berth, didn't even notice and suddenly wondered where we and that catamaran had gone. He came after us quite quickly, and the first words we heard him say were, “I’m never buying a fuel engine again; what an amazing thing this is,” while he couldn't stop talking about our ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus motor. So that is what electric boating does to you, and what we would love for everyone to experience.
Once at Haringliet, we were the only boat on the water, and with a light breeze, we sailed to and from the camera boat several times. First under engine power, then under sail—after all, we're electric sailors, not the other way around.
In the harbor
Back in the box, we first made a nice hot cup of coffee, after which we took the time to demonstrate and document the technical installations in the boat.
After this 'break', we jumped back into the dinghy to go test sailing with the ePropulsion 1.0 Plus and the Temo 450.Both are very different for very different applications, and both were received very positively. All in all, a wonderful, active day resulting in a great article. Thank you Maandblad Zeilen, Ben Rutte, Joris Westerveld, and Eric van den Brandt.
