Off-grid van at Robust-MT?
At the end of October 2024, we were approached by a potential customer for an off-grid van, asking if we could install a Victron inverter in the short term. They also requested an extra battery and significant capacity. Of course we could! After all, it doesn't matter to us whether the vehicle has a keel or wheels. What's safe in a seagoing sailboat is also safe in a van.
We first created a custom proposal for a off-grid van kit in our webshop, giving the customer ample time to consider the requirements, components, and the associated investment. We also created a customized quote, including hourly rates and small parts costs, based on a post-calculation. This was done to avoid surprises and ensure maximum transparency from the outset.
The main requirements for this off-grid van were:
- Charging 48V hand tools
- Making coffee on the go
- Use a 1600W pump for 15 minutes several times a day
- Additional battery to avoid unnecessary strain on the starter battery
- Charging while driving (Diesel bus)
- Possibility to charge via shore power
- Expandable with, for example, solar panels
- Modular and transferable to another bus
Order and dismantling
On January 2nd, we measured the van and ordered the components. We started on January 9th, and on Sunday, January 12th, the entire off-grid van was completed, thoroughly tested, and delivered to the customer in the evening, documented and ready for use again on Monday.
The main components in this installation
- Victron MultiPlus-II
- Victron Lithium battery
- Victron Lynx BMS
- Victron Lynx Distributor
- Victron Cerbo with touchscreen
- Victron Orion
- Shore power connection ratio
All in all, this is a project we're truly proud of and would love to build on. If you're also interested in a similar solution for your van, camper, tiny house, or boat, please don't hesitate to contact us.
