Description

Victron Orion XS DC-DC battery charger 12/12-70A

Victron Orion XS DC-DC battery charger 12/12-70A

For fast charging of lithium or lead-acid battery banks from the starter battery and alternator in motorhomes, vans, and boats (12/12-70). With 70A, the charger gets more out of a powerful alternator than the 50A version. If the starter battery is too low to start, the emergency charge function recharges it. Also usable as a 12V power supply. Only for dry indoor spaces. Battery voltage and input and output voltage For 12V systems: input voltage 9-17V, output voltage adjustable from 10 to 17V with a tolerance of maximum 0.25%. Charging between 12V and 24V is not possible with this version. The built-in engine detection activates the charger only when the alternator is supplying power; an external engine signal (>8V on the L-pin) can override this. Power 1000W continuous up to 40°C at a charging voltage of 14.3V; at 12V this is 840W. Above 40°C, power decreases by 1.5% per °C. With limited cooling, the charger reduces power sooner. Battery charger function: Adaptive 4-stage charging algorithm (bulk, absorption, float, storage) with eight pre-programmed battery settings and a freely programmable profile. Input and output current are independently adjustable from 1 to 70A in steps of 0.1A to prevent the alternator from becoming overloaded. Starter battery emergency charge (firmware v1.15): the charger temporarily reverses the charging direction and charges the starter battery for 15 minutes from the service battery, followed by a 5-minute rest period during which the engine can be started. Charging current is a maximum of half the nominal current, up to a maximum of 14.4V on the starter battery. Emergency charging is available as soon as the charger stops charging in advance due to engine detection or input voltage protection, even in remote-off mode. If the service battery voltage drops too low, the current decreases. Connectable with An unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel for a higher charging current. In that case, start an emergency charge on all units or switch off the others first; otherwise, they will charge against each other. Via VE.Smart Networking, the charger receives voltage, temperature, and current from a SmartShunt, BMV, or Smart Battery Sense; synchronous charging is not supported. Composition Suitable for lead-acid and lithium batteries via the pre-programmed settings or a custom charging profile. Control by a battery management system can be digital via DVCC or via the allowed-to-charge contact on the H-pin. Construction The power electronics are housed in an IP65 enclosure, but the device as a whole is IP20 and is therefore only suitable for dry indoor spaces. Cooling with two integrated fans in the base plate. Protected against overload, short circuit, and overheating (cooling plate maximum 90°C). Mounting Mount on a non-combustible, flat surface with at least 10cm of clearance all around and a clear air intake for the fan, close to but never above the battery. External battery fuse 80-100A and cable minimum 25mm² (4 AWG) up to 10m. The screw terminals with TORK crimp technology secure a ferrule during tightening, without the need for a separate crimping tool. Strain relief clamps cables from 9mm outer diameter. Communication: Setup, read out, and start emergency charging using the VictronConnect app (v6.43 or later) via Bluetooth on a smartphone or tablet. The VE.Direct port connects to a GX device for DVCC control and monitoring via the VRM Portal – Victron Energy (https://vrm.victronenergy.com/login), through which firmware updates can also be installed remotely. DVCC requires Orion XS firmware v1.03 and Venus OS v3.20 or later. Yes, from firmware v1.15 with VictronConnect v6.43: 15 minutes emergency charge, followed by a 5-minute rest period to start the engine. It is not a continuous reverse charge. May I mount this version outdoors or in an engine compartment? No. The charger as a whole is IP20 and is only intended for a dry indoor space. For damp locations, the 12/12-50A and the 1400 with IP65 are suitable. Can I connect multiple chargers in parallel for higher charging current? Yes, an unlimited number of units can be connected in parallel. Start an emergency charge on all units simultaneously or switch off the others first, otherwise they will charge against each other. Does DVCC work if the charger charges a separate second battery? No. With DVCC in charger mode, the output must be on the main battery of the GX system. If the charger charges another battery, disable DVCC, disconnect the VE.Direct connection, or use power mode.
