Mighty 3D-printed sloop HISWA 2023

In early 2023, Robust-MT Marine Technology BV was approached by a team of young maritime designers. Their goal was to present a fully 3D-printed luxury sloop at HISWA 2023. The designers' requested specifications were technically unfeasible, as the intention was for the sloop to be able to sail at high speed for extended periods. However, due to the innovative nature of this project, we accepted the assignment anyway and realized the complete electrical installation within a very short timeframe.

Customer's wish

The clients were looking for a specialist to design the complete electrical system on board. The sloop had to be delivered fully functional for the exhibition, with components that matched a luxurious appearance. The key requirements were:

Electric drive

A powerful electric motor that could meet the high power demand of the vessel.

Reliable batteries

A battery pack with sufficient capacity and power to stably power the motor.

Comfort and lighting

The installation of a good audio system, the mandatory navigation lights, and atmospheric LED lighting for the interior.

Shore power connection

A safe shore power installation to easily charge the batteries in your own harbor.

The solution under high time pressure

This project was characterized by an extremely short lead time. There was no time to deliver the hull to us; therefore, our engineering team started work immediately at the 3D printer production site. The hull was not ready until a Friday morning, and even then it was still resting on the print foundations (supports). The sloop had to be fully operational at the HISWA by the following Tuesday morning. Within this four-day timeframe on-site, we built the complete installation using the following high-quality components:

Drive & Energy

A Torqeedo Cruise 12.0 electric motor (12 kW, comparable to approx. 25 hp) from our standard range was selected . This motor is coupled to a battery bank of two Torqeedo Power 48-5000 lithium batteries .

Charging & Shore Power

We have installed a fully secured shore power system to safely charge the heavy 48V batteries from the jetty in accordance with standards.

Audio & Multimedia

For onboard entertainment, a Garmin Fusion RA210 XS Sport set neatly integrated into the specific hull construction.

Relief

The sloop is equipped with approved navigation lights and an LED system that beautifully accentuates the distinctive lines of the 3D-printed interior.

Global cost indication

For such a project, we would be happy to advise you on the total investment. Enclosed you will find a transparent overview of the actual costs for this specific electrification:

Result

The electrical installation was completed on-site well within the deadline, allowing the sloop to be presented on schedule at HISWA 2023. Although the original wish to cruise at top speed for extended periods was technically unfeasible for a sloop of this size, we delivered a perfectly functioning, safe, and presentable system within four days. The combination of the powerful Torqeedo Cruise 12.0, Garmin audio, and integrated lighting met all the requirements for the exhibition.
