World premiere of electric Catamaran 'Lady Karemaniya'

At Robust-MT , we believe in the power of sustainable and high-quality marine propulsion. How better to demonstrate this specialization than with our own groundbreaking pioneering project? In 2019, we started the complete rebuild of our own Iroquois #221 sailing catamaran, formerly known as Lady of Urr and since renamed Lady Karemaniya. For this extensive refit project, we joined forces with the craftsmen at Molenaar Jachtbouw in Woubrugge.

This unique project marked an absolute milestone in the maritime sector when the boat was successfully launched in 2022. It was, in fact, the world's very first electric cabin catamaran with a double pod setup. With this successful conversion, we have proven that emission-free sailing on large, challenging waters is a reliable and comfortable reality. This innovative approach quickly attracted attention within the international watersports community and resulted in, among other things, an extensive article in the renowned Zeilen Magazine.

Customer's wish

As specialists in electric boating, we set extremely strict requirements for the new configuration of our catamaran. The original, noisy, and maintenance-intensive Yamaha 9.9 High Thrust long-shaft outboard motor had to make way for good. The boat now has a permanent berth in strategically located Stellendam, a perfect base for out on open water. Our key criteria for the new, fully electric propulsion system were precisely tailored to our intended cruising area: the British coast and, in particular, the rugged Scottish islands

Fully electric boating

An extremely reliable, quiet, and emission-free propulsion system that seamlessly complements the comfort and sailing characteristics of a high-quality catamaran.

Flexible charging

The ability to charge efficiently at virtually any location, in tidal ports, and via standard shore power facilities.

Impressive range

A minimum engine time of 8 hours per day to ensure safe maneuvering at all times, even in calm conditions or strong tidal currents.

Wide range

An intended cruising range of at least 70 kilometers on a full battery charge, to comfortably cover longer crossings.

Solution by Robust-MT

To meet these high safety and performance requirements on the open sea, a fully redundant, dual system was chosen. The catamaran is equipped with two completely separate sets. The following high-quality configuration has been installed on each side:

Drive

Two ePropulsion Pod Drive 3.0 Evo motors. These compact, underwater-mounted motors provide hydrodynamic, efficient, and whisper-quiet propulsion without the inconveniences of a traditional outboard motor.

Energy storage

The boat is equipped with ePropulsion e80 batteries. Since this specific variant is no longer available, we currently recommend and install the next most recent ePropulsion E100 lithium battery. This offers exactly the reliable performance, high energy density, and capacity required for this power output on open water.

Operation & Loading

The motors are precisely controlled via the ergonomic ePropulsion Evo top control. Each set is equipped with an efficient 30A charger for fast and safe charging.

We sailed into Rotterdam with our electric catamaran via Gouda and the IJssel after departing from Woubrugge. All this on a single battery charge and within one day. Flowing water, locks, wind, waves, and really busy waterways were all part of the experience that day.

The journey continued through the Nieuwe Waterweg via the Botlek to the Oude Maas and through the Spui to the impressive Haringvliet, with our home port of Stellendam as the final destination.

Result

The result of this intensive collaboration with Molenaar Jachtbouw is an unprecedented success. The double setup makes the catamaran extremely maneuverable in tight harbors, such as our home port in Stellendam, and offers the crucial safety of a double system at sea. The set goals have been more than achieved: since her launch in 2022, the Lady Karemaniya has been sailing silently, effortlessly achieves the desired 8 hours on the engine, and covers the intended 70 kilometers with ease. With this, the boat is fully ready for challenging voyages along the Scottish islands.
