Victron isolation transformer 2500W 115/230V
If two of these metals are located in a conductive liquid and are electrically connected to each other, a current will flow through the liquid. In this process, the 'least noble' metal is corroded. Seawater is an excellent conductor and causes potentially severe corrosion. However, 'fresh' water is also conductive! To prevent corrosion of the propeller, propeller shaft, valves, and other metal parts of a boat, zinc anodes are installed. The less noble zinc is then corroded instead of the other metal parts. A steel or aluminum hull can also be severely affected. A shore power connection without earthing and a residual current device (RCD) is extremely dangerous. When the ship is directly connected to shore power, all metal parts must be connected to the earth wire of the shore connection. The RCD interrupts the power supply when a leakage current (moisture!) or short circuit occurs to the metal parts. Without earthing and an RCD, the boat and the water surrounding it could become live due to a short circuit or leakage current! However, due to the earth connection to the shore and via shore connections of other boats, electrolytic corrosion will increase significantly. Moisture and electrolytic potentials will also often cause the RCD to trip frequently or even instantly after connection to the shore. The best way to prevent electrolytic corrosion while simultaneously guaranteeing optimal safety is the installation of an isolation transformer. The isolation transformer transfers energy to the onboard network without direct electrical contact. Electricity is converted into magnetism in a toroidal transformer and subsequently converted back into electricity. The neutral conductor of the secondary side of the transformer is connected to the housing and the ship's ground (all metal parts). In the event of an electrical fault, an RCD or fuse will trip. Softstart is a standard feature in the Victron Energy isolation transformer. Softstart ensures that the current is switched on gradually, preventing the shore fuse from becoming overloaded. It is important advice that, for an installation with an isolation transformer that is not (temporarily) located in the water, the secondary side should be connected to the earth of the 230 V mains by means of a temporary earth connection. This is to provide optimal safety in this situation.
