Victron Pre-Charge Cable DC Inrush Current Protection. Applications: For commissioning installations with an inverter, inverter/charger, or MPPT charge controller. When connecting the battery bank, the internal capacitors draw a peak current that sparks at the terminal; this cable first charges them in a controlled manner. What happens without pre-charging: The capacitors in an inverter or charge controller are discharged upon connection and briefly behave like a short circuit. This causes a short, high inrush current with sparking at the battery terminal, and eventually damage to terminals, fuses, and DC switches. Operation: The cable temporarily places a resistor in the circuit. As a result, the capacitors charge in a controlled manner before the main fuse or DC switch is activated. With a MultiPlus-II 48/5000, pre-charging is completed within a second; with larger systems, it takes longer. Larger installations: For systems with multiple inverters or a large capacitor bank, multiple pre-charge cables can be deployed in parallel so that all units are safely energized. The cable is installed between the battery terminal and the DC distribution.
