The ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus has been the absolute market leader in the world of electric outboard motors for years. With its distinctive floating battery and whisper-quiet operation, this motor managed to convince countless water sports enthusiasts to make the switch to electric boating. But technology does not stand still. The brand recently launched its long-awaited successor. The new ePropulsion Spirit 2 offers more power, a sleeker design, and smarter technology.
Many boat owners are now naturally wondering whether it is worth choosing the latest model. To answer that question, we dive deeper into the key differences between these two popular engines.
The most striking difference lies directly in the sheer thrust. The familiar Spirit 1.0 Plus delivers a continuous power of 1,000 watts, which in practice is comparable to a 3 hp petrol engine. For leisurely trips on sheltered water, this is often more than sufficient. However, the new Spirit 2 takes a clear step forward in this regard with a standard continuous power of 2,000 watts. This allows it to deliver performance comparable to a 5 hp petrol engine. With this, you simply reach your destination faster and maintain more control over heavier boats.
Sometimes, on the water, you unexpectedly find yourself in a situation where you immediately need more power. Think of a sudden strong headwind, a strong current on a river, or having to quickly swerve to avoid a large inland vessel. Especially for these kinds of moments, the manufacturer has equipped the Spirit 2 with a unique Sport Mode. As soon as you activate this, the power temporarily rises to an impressive 3,000 watts. With this peak power of no less than 6 hp, you are assured of extra power and control, even under challenging conditions.
In addition to the thrust, the power supply has also been completely renewed. The Spirit 1.0 Plus was known for its floating battery with a capacity of 1,276 Wh. This was connected to the motor with a power cable. For the latest generation, this design has been significantly modernized. The new Spirit 2 uses a more powerful 1,539 Wh lithium-ion battery that you simply click onto the top of the motor. This new connection is completely wireless. As a result, you no longer have loose power cables running across the aft deck.
Although this new battery pack no longer floats like its predecessor, it weighs only 10.4 kilograms. A practical advantage of this new battery is the built-in USB-C port. This allows you to easily charge your smartphone or navigation equipment directly from the outboard motor during a long boat trip.
A larger battery naturally means a greater range, allowing you to stay on the water for extended periods with the Spirit 2. However, the range of the Spirit 1.0 Plus is also more than sufficient for the average recreational boater. If you wish to take longer trips, it is always possible to purchase an extra battery . Also, don't forget to look at a matching fast charger to significantly reduce your charging time between trips.
While boating, you always want to maintain full control. With the previous model, you had to read the battery status and remaining range on a small, monochrome screen. The brand has innovated significantly in this area as well. The Spirit 2 comes standard with a bright full-color display on the ergonomic tiller. This improved color screen shows all essential boating data at a single clear glance. Even in the bright midday sun, you can see immediately how much longer you can boat and how much power you are consuming at that moment.
The Spirit 2 is also the first Spirit to feature a GPS, so you can see not only your speed but also how long you have been sailing and how far you can still sail.
The choice between these two models depends heavily on your boating area and the type of boat you own. If you mainly use small dinghies or inflatable boats on quiet and sheltered recreational lakes, the proven technology of the more affordable Spirit 1.0 Plus is still an excellent choice. However, if you have a larger/heavier boat or desire more speed, the choice is simpler. The doubling of power and the added Sport Mode make the new ePropulsion Spirit 2 absolutely worth the investment.
